People say no one reads anymore. I disagree. We read all day long. It may not be Proust, but it's reading: Cereal boxes, emails, traffic signs, menus, headlines at the checkout, news tickers on the TV, more emails, pill bottles, then a magazine or mystery in bed. Also, memos, reports, work orders, manuals. Most of it is awful—dull, stilted, confusing—but we read on, because that's life. By nightfall our spirits are wilted from the exercise.

"Competition for ‘eyeballs’ is fierce. That's why, if you have something to say that nobody actually HAS to read,  . . . it better be good."
